How to calculate board feet

Board feet = Thickness (in) × Width (in) × Length (ft) ÷ 12

Why ÷ 12? Thickness and width are measured in inches, while length is measured in feet. Dividing by 12 converts those mixed units into board feet. Using inches for length? Divide by 144 instead: Board feet = Thickness (in) × Width (in) × Length (in) ÷ 144.

Worked example: 2" × 6" × 8' → 2 × 6 × 8 ÷ 12 = 8 board feet

Buying hardwood?

Hardwood thickness is commonly expressed in quarters. Supplier tally and rounding practices can vary, so DangIt calculates from the dimensions you enter rather than silently applying a supplier convention.
