Frequently asked questions
Measure the length and width of the floor and multiply them to get the total floor area. Then add an allowance for waste from cuts, mistakes, and unusable pieces. For example, a 200 sq ft room with 10% waste requires about 220 sq ft of flooring.
Multiply the room length by the room width: Length × Width = Floor area. For example, a room that is 12 ft long and 10 ft wide has a floor area of 120 sq ft. For irregular or L-shaped rooms, divide the floor into rectangular sections, calculate each section separately, and add the areas together.
First calculate the total amount of flooring needed, including waste. Then divide that number by the coverage listed on each box or pack. Always round up to the next whole box. For example, if you need 220 sq ft of flooring and each box covers 24 sq ft: 220 ÷ 24 = 9.17. You would need 10 boxes.
A common allowance is around 10% extra, but the amount can vary depending on the room layout, flooring type, plank size, and installation pattern. Simple rectangular rooms may require less, while diagonal layouts, complex rooms, or patterns can create more offcuts. The calculator lets you choose the waste percentage that fits your project.
Divide the L-shaped floor into two or more rectangles. Measure the length and width of each section, calculate their areas separately, and then add the areas together. For example:
Section 1: 10 × 12 ft = 120 sq ft
Section 2: 5 × 6 ft = 30 sq ft
Total floor area = 150 sq ft
Then add your chosen waste allowance.
Section 1: 10 × 12 ft = 120 sq ft
Section 2: 5 × 6 ft = 30 sq ft
Total floor area = 150 sq ft
Then add your chosen waste allowance.
Yes. The calculator can be used for laminate, vinyl plank, engineered wood, hardwood, and other flooring sold by area. Enter the coverage per box or pack shown on the product packaging to calculate how many boxes or packs you need.
